Dangerous goods - Ground

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are objects that consist of or contain substances that on account of their properties may cause harm to human beings, animals, property, the environment or means of transport. These substances or objects have been categorised by UN experts in nine different risk classes and sub-classes.

Customers ordering the carriage of dangerous goods must always state:
1. The class
2. The substance identification number
3. The number of packages
4. The weight

Limited quantity
Certain classes make use of the concept of “limited quantity”,
e.g. for jerrycans, windscreen washer fluid, lighters and similar "recreational” substances where the consignment is marked with an LQ or UN number. It is the responsibility of the customer to notify us whether the consignment consists of a limited quantity.
For the carriage of a “limited quantity”, no special equipment is required in the vehicle and the driver does not need special training.
The customer must always ensure that the consignment is accompanied by some kind of freight document showing the following text:
"This vehicle is carrying a free quantity of dangerous goods transported in accordance with provisions of the ADR".

Calculated value quantity
In the appended table you will find the classes and UN numbers which, subject to certain weight restrictions, can be transported as a “calculated value” quantity.
The customer must always ensure that consignments of dangerous goods are accompanied by the following documents:

Under calculated value quantity 1000
1. Shipper’s declaration for dangerous goods

Above calculated value quantity 1000
1. Shipper’s declaration for dangerous goods
2. Written instructions

Sender’s responsibility

The sender shall:

  • Ensure that the dangerous goods are properly classified as permissible for carriage.
  • Only use approved and suitable packages and tanks.
  • Ensure that the goods are correctly marked and labelled.
  • Submit to the shipper all documents required for carriage.
  • Comply with all regulations pertaining to the mode of shipment and any restrictions on carriage.
  • Ensure that emptied, non-cleaned and non-degassed tanks, vehicles and containers are also correctly marked and labelled and that tanks are as leakproof and well sealed as when they are full.

The sender may enlist the aid of other parties involved, e.g. packers, truck operators and loaders.

Instructions
